Mortal Kombat is my favorite fighting game to date. I won't waste your time. If you're on the very edge of buying this game, have no fear. It's worth it . Mortal Kombat bursts with content, more than any other fighting game I can think of. Expect to plug in about 5-10 hours with story mode alone with some of your favorite characters. And that's just story mode.

Story Mode

The story mode in Mortal Kombat is unlike any other in the fighting genre, the clostest being Tekken and Dead or Alive. Its an engaging, flushed out, well executed story that will grab you. And in a genre that either has an unbelievably disappointing story mode, or even lacks one completely, let's all say thank you to Mortal Kombat for going through the trouble and delivering an entertaining experience.

Mortal Kombat: Welcome, Old Friend

Combat is faster, fluid, and even more brutal than ever. Let's welcome back the 2D plane. Welcome back, Old Friend.The fighting mechanics are familiar and in general, it's fairly easy for a beginner to learn and get into. There's even a handy tutorial system. On behalf of casual gamers and those new to the Mortal Kombat Franchise, thanks for that.

Mortal Kombat Combos and Abilities

Mortal Kombat has a more a casual approach to combat. There's combos like any other fighter out there, and rightly so. There's almost nothing more gratifying than stringing together two, three, four combos and crushing your opponent. But Mortal Kombat's combat is still easier to master than fighters like Tekken, something casual gamers will appreciate, but still substantial enough for the serious gamers to sink their teeth into.

Powerup Bar One Of The Best New Features

Mortal Kombat's Powerup Bar. I love this feature and you will too. Fill it up to level one you get a super powered version of the character's special attack. Level two grants a combo breaker, level 3 executes a brutal x-ray attack in which carnage ensues; ribs burst, eyes blow out, bodies tear and bones and tendons are severed and crushed. Gore, gore, and more gore. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

Mortal Kombat Multiplayer

This game has 4 player multiplayer. Two vs. two tag team. I know i keep using this example, but here we go again. Tag team is very similar to Tekken. And it's a blast to play with family and friends. (older family and friends, I wouldn't recommend playing Mortal Kombat with your five year old son.) But maybe you would. You sick freak.

Challenge Tower

300 event Challenge Tower. This will keep you hooked for hours. Each challenge adds a fun twist that changes the gameplay and will keep you on your toes as you add more notches to your belt.

King of the Hill

Online mode is spectacular. King of the hill online mode has built-in player lobbies in which players can actually watch other matches will waiting for their own. None of that watching loading screens or player cards and names. Watch the competition, study their playing style. Assess. Strategize. Begin your match with a plan of attack. Be sure to take on the game in cooperative gameplay while you're at it.

Not enough for you? Here's two more reasons to buy the game at a glance.

1. The crypt has really cool unlockables, character bios, and you can discover "secret" Fatalities as well as some really twisted things I won't give away in this review. But they're fun, if somewhat disturbing. But it wouldn't be Mortal Kombat otherwise.

2. Babyalities make a hilarious return.

So that's a lot of BUY THIS GAME! and THIS GAME IS AMAZING!  Right? Well, it really is. But like all games there are some drawbacks that must be addressed. For starters, there is some major online lag. Big time. Frustratingly so. But please, push through and try to deal as best you can. Once you get into a fight, the wait feels worth it. (in most cases)

Unfinished Business

While the story elements are compelling and outright dwarf most fighting games, there are some things that are just left out in some cases, happening off-screen and therefore players will have to look into it and do a bit of investigation, if they're so inclined, to get the full story.

Mortal Kombat Boss Fight

Boss fights are brutal in this game. You will be trolled. Over and over and over. Bosses will spam the seemingly cheapest, most underhanded moves and abilities. Normally, this is no real reason to take away from a game's score, nothing wrong with a challenge, but bearing in mind the number of casual gamers drawn to Mortal Combat and you may have a problem with fed up players.

Balancing Issues

Finally, there are some balancing issues in that some of the combos are easily exploitable under certain conditions and circumstances, some even ending a match in about two-three seconds against an inexperienced player. Also, beware of projectile spammers. And if you're one, shame on you. Gain some real skill and fight like a man. Or woman. I know ladies who enjoy Mortal Kombat as much as the next guy.

Mortal Kombat Final Verdict

Mortal Kombat is a fighter than can be described in one word: Content. The fighting is solid, there's a story mode, a satisfying online mode, tons of extras and extra game modes, I could go on. Granted, there are some problems with the game. But as you can see, the pros far outweigh the cons. Mortal Kombat earns the score of 9 out of 10. If games like Skyward Sword and Red Dead Redemption are the standard in which open-world games are measured, then Mortal Kombat should be the same for the fighting genre.
